A. W. Tozer, widely regarded as one of the most perceptive writers in the 20th century, said, “The Word of God well understood and religiously obeyed is the shortest route to spiritual perfection. And we must not select a few favorite passages to the exclusion of others. Nothing less than a whole Bible can make a whole Christian.”

God has given us amazing minds. These powerful instruments possess an almost limitless capacity to remember. Memorizing Bible verses is a skill and discipline that yields lifelong rewards (Joshua 1:8; Psalm 1:2-3). Learn Bible verses together with your child. Discover the marvelous mental potential that God has given to you.

Scripture Memorization: Eight Key Benefits

  1. Deepens our meditation time.
  2. Strengthens our faith.
  3. Shapes the way we view the world.
  4. Makes God’s Word accessible 24-7.
  5. Guards our minds.
  6. Shields us from the enemy.
  7. Ministers to others.
  8. Provides a conduit to God.

Practical Ideas

  1. As a class project, create memory cards containing suggested Bible memory verses. Send them home along with an encouraging note asking parents to help their children memorize the verse each week.
  2. Show the kids that you memorize Bible passages, too. Encourage parents to memorize the same Bible verse each week as well.
  3. Emphasize the importance of repeated exposure to the weekly Bible verse at church, home, and even school. Encourage parents to copy the weekly memory card and include it in their child’s lunchbox.

One Response to “Teaching Kids to Memorize God’s Word”

  1. Jeffrey Rathbone Says:

Psalm 119:11 Since beginning Discipleland and Discipletown in September, we have placed a renewed emphasis on memorization and sword drills. It is encouraging to see the children respond and begin to place God’s Word in their hearts, and bringing it back to their attitudes and conduct.
